Chiropractic Treatment for a Rotator Cuff Injury

Rotator cuff injuries impact one or more rotator cuff muscle tendons supporting your shoulder bones and shoulder joint. These four muscles allow you to rotate your shoulder while stabilizing the connection between your shoulder socket and upper arm bone. Rotator cuff muscles can be strained, sprained or torn. All injuries should receive treatment by your chiropractor in Owen Sound as soon as possible to reduce pain and stiffness, improve range of motion and wholly heal damaged muscle without drugs or surgery.

Symptoms of a Rotator Cuff Injury

Sudden, sharp pain accompanied by a sensation of tearing, pain radiating down the arm and inability to move the shoulder without feeling pain are possible signs of a sprained or torn rotator cuff muscle. Pain worsens as inflammation spreads, with increasing weakness of the shoulder interfering with your ability to use the shoulder normally. Raising an arm and shoulder affected by a rotator cuff injury is often difficult and, in some cases, may be impossible.

What Causes Rotator Cuff Injuries?

Most rotator cuff injuries result from quick twisting or overextension of the shoulder joint. The two muscles commonly affected by strains and tears are those involved in shoulder rotations--the infraspinatus and the supraspinatus. People who bowl, swim, kayak or pitch on a baseball team are more at risk of suffering rotator cuff injuries than people who don't rotate their shoulders powerfully and frequently. Acute (sudden) rotator cuff injury to non-athletes usually happens from falling heavily onto the upper arm or shoulder or improperly lifting heavy items.

Treating Rotator Cuff Injuries with Chiropractic Care

In addition to massage therapy for stimulating circulation of blood and fluids to damaged muscles and tendons, your chiropractor starts rehabilitating rotator cuff injuries by having patients perform functional, strengthening and stretching shoulder exercises addressing the severity of the injury. Your chiropractor may also recommend cold therapy involving applications of ice for 15 minutes every hour to help decrease swelling and pain.

Diagnosing Rotator Cuff Injuries

By moving your arm into several positions and pressing on various areas of your shoulder, your chiropractor can usually diagnose whether rotator cuff muscles are sprained or torn. Imaging tests such as x-rays or MRIs may be ordered to provide a more accurate picture of the shoulder and rotator cuff muscles.

If you are suffering chronic shoulder pain, inability to lift your arm and restricted range of motion, please call Advanced Pain Relief Clinic today at 519-376-9355 to schedule an appointment with your chiropractor in Owen Sound.

Testimonial

“I had been having chronic pain for years, in addition to 3 different medications I was receiving regular joint injections for my pain.  When we moved here, we found Dr. Moona and everything changed. His care and the staff at the clinic are amazing! I don't take medication (or injections)  anymore and I feel great.  Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and the clinic…in fact I often do!
